Best Tank Mates for Cherry Shrimp—and What to Avoid

Red Cherry shrimp grazing on moss in a planted freshwater aquarium

The best Cherry shrimp tank mates are peaceful species that share the aquarium’s conditions and do not treat shrimp—or their young—as food. There is no universally shrimp-safe fish: behavior, tank size, cover and individual temperament matter.

At Razz Aquatics, we plan a shrimp tank around the shrimp first. A mixed tank should not begin by reducing shrimp cover or stability to fit another species.

Tank-mate decision cards

Other shrimp
Confirm compatible long-term water needs.
Snails
Many can be considered when food, water and bioload are managed.
Small fish
Research adult behavior; small fish may still eat shrimplets.
Predators
Avoid species known to hunt invertebrates.

Before adding tank mates

  • Cycle and test the aquarium first.
  • Provide moss, plants and hardscape for cover.
  • Confirm water needs for every exact species.
  • Add livestock gradually and observe feeding behavior.

Frequently asked questions

Can Cherry shrimp live with nano fish?

Some may be considered, but none should be assumed safe; research exact behavior and provide cover.

Are snails good tank mates?

They can be when water needs and total bioload are managed.

Why do shrimp need plants with fish?

Plants and moss create cover and grazing surfaces.
