How to Cycle a Shrimp Tank: A Step-by-Step Beginner Guide

Cycling a shrimp tank means establishing beneficial bacteria that process toxic ammonia into nitrite and then into less harmful nitrate. The safest method is a fishless cycle, which builds the biological filter before any shrimp are added.

A shrimp tank is ready only when testing confirms that the biofilter can process an ammonia source without leaving detectable ammonia or nitrite behind. A tank that has merely been running for a few days is not necessarily cycled.

What Does Cycling a Shrimp Tank Do?

Shrimp, fish, decaying plant material, and uneaten food all contribute nitrogen waste to an aquarium. In a new tank, there may not be enough beneficial bacteria to process that waste safely.

The biological filter develops in three basic stages:

Ammonia and nitrite should not be detectable in a shrimp aquarium. Shrimp are sensitive to poor water quality and sudden changes, so adding them before the biofilter is established creates an unnecessary risk.

What You Need to Cycle a Shrimp Tank

Set up the aquarium as closely as possible to the way it will operate after the shrimp arrive.

  • Aquarium, preferably at least 5–10 gallons for better stability
  • Sponge filter or another filter with shrimp-safe intake protection
  • Dechlorinator for tap water
  • Liquid tests for ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate
  • A controlled aquarium ammonia source intended for fishless cycling
  • Substrate, hardscape, and live plants
  • Heater and thermometer when required for the intended livestock
  • Optional bottled nitrifying bacteria
  • Optional established filter media from a healthy, trusted aquarium

Never use household ammonia unless the product is confirmed to contain no soap, fragrance, surfactants, or other additives. An aquarium-specific ammonium chloride product is easier to dose and test accurately.

Step 1: Assemble the Complete Aquarium

Install the substrate, hardscape, plants, filter, and heater before beginning the cycle. Fill the aquarium and treat tap water with a dechlorinator according to its label.

Run the filter continuously. Beneficial bacteria colonize filter media, substrate, hardscape, plant surfaces, and other wet surfaces throughout the aquarium. Good circulation and oxygenation help the biological filter develop.

A sponge filter is especially useful in a shrimp tank because it provides biological filtration, gentle flow, and a surface that shrimp can graze after the aquarium matures.

Step 2: Add Plants and Grazing Surfaces

Live plants can be added before cycling begins. They provide additional surfaces for microorganisms, absorb some nitrogen compounds, and help the aquarium develop into a more stable environment.

Mosses are particularly useful in shrimp aquariums because their fine growth provides shelter and grazing area. Anubias, Java Fern, and other easy plants can also be added during setup.

Step 3: Add a Controlled Ammonia Source

Beneficial bacteria need an ammonia source to establish the biofilter. For a fishless cycle, use an aquarium product made specifically for this purpose and follow its directions.

A starting concentration around 2 ppm total ammonia is a practical target for many new aquariums. Test after dosing instead of relying only on the calculated amount, especially in a small tank. Do not exceed the product's directions, and never add fishless-cycling ammonia while shrimp, fish, or snails are present.

Some aquarists use fish food as the ammonia source. This “ghost feeding” method can work, but decomposition is harder to control and may make the cycle less predictable. A measured aquarium ammonia product gives clearer test results.

Step 4: Add Nitrifying Bacteria if Desired

Bottled nitrifying bacteria are optional, but they may help establish the biological filter more quickly when the product is stored and used correctly. Follow the label, check the expiration date, and add the required ammonia source within the recommended window.

Established filter media can also introduce beneficial bacteria. Only move media from a healthy aquarium with no unresolved disease, parasite, or contamination concerns. Keep the media wet during transfer and place it where water will flow through it.

Do not assume either method has instantly completed the cycle. Continue testing.

Step 5: Test Ammonia, Nitrite, and Nitrate

Test the aquarium every day or two and record the results. A simple cycling log makes the progress much easier to understand.

The pattern usually looks like this:

  1. Ammonia is detectable after the initial dose.
  2. Ammonia begins to fall as the first bacterial population develops.
  3. Nitrite becomes detectable and may remain elevated for a while.
  4. Nitrite eventually falls as the second bacterial population develops.
  5. Nitrate becomes detectable as the end product of nitrification.

The stages may overlap, and bottled bacteria or established media can make the classic “spikes” less obvious. What matters is the tank's ability to process ammonia without leaving ammonia or nitrite behind.

Step 6: Keep the Cycle Moving

Continue running the filter and maintain stable conditions. If ammonia reaches zero but nitrite is still present, allow the nitrite-processing bacteria more time to develop.

If both ammonia and nitrite reach zero but you are not ready to add shrimp, provide a small maintenance dose of the aquarium ammonia source according to its label. This keeps the biofilter supplied until stocking day.

If the cycle appears stalled:

  • Confirm that chlorine and chloramine were treated.
  • Check that the filter is running and the water is well oxygenated.
  • Test pH and KH; nitrification can slow when pH or alkalinity becomes too low.
  • Confirm the test kit and bottled bacteria are not expired.
  • Perform a partial water change if ammonia or nitrite has become excessively high.
  • Avoid replacing or sterilizing the biological filter media during cycling.

Step 7: Confirm That the Tank Is Cycled

Do not rely on elapsed time alone. Confirm the biofilter before adding shrimp.

  1. Dose the aquarium ammonia product to the label-directed confirmation level.
  2. Test again approximately 24 hours later.
  3. The goal is 0 ppm ammonia and 0 ppm nitrite.
  4. Confirm that nitrate is present unless plants or another process are consuming it rapidly.

If ammonia or nitrite remains detectable, continue cycling and test again later.

Once the tank passes, complete an appropriate water change to reduce nitrate. Recheck temperature, pH, GH, and KH before selecting shrimp. Neocaridina and Caridina shrimp have different water requirements, so the tank should be prepared for the type you plan to keep.

A Cycled Tank Is Not Always a Mature Shrimp Tank

Passing the nitrogen-cycle test means the biofilter can process waste. It does not necessarily mean the aquarium has developed abundant biofilm and other natural grazing surfaces.

Shrimp spend much of the day grazing. Allowing additional time for plants, moss, wood, leaves, and other surfaces to mature can make the aquarium more welcoming—especially for a new colony or baby shrimp.

During this period:

  • Keep the filter running.
  • Maintain the bacterial colony with a controlled ammonia source when no livestock is present.
  • Watch for stable temperature and water chemistry.
  • Allow plant roots to establish.
  • Add shrimp-safe botanicals or hardscape if they fit the intended setup.

Adding the First Shrimp

When the tank is cycled, stable, and suited to the chosen species, add shrimp gradually rather than heavily stocking the aquarium at once.

Before ordering:

  • Confirm ammonia and nitrite are 0 ppm.
  • Confirm nitrate is within the appropriate range.
  • Match GH, KH, pH, and temperature to the shrimp species.
  • Protect every filter intake.
  • Prepare an acclimation container and airline tubing if drip acclimation will be used.

Adding too much ammonia

More ammonia does not necessarily produce a faster or better cycle. Follow the aquarium product's label and verify the result with a test kit.

Confusing a bacterial bloom with a completed cycle

Cloudy water is common in new aquariums, but its appearance does not prove that ammonia and nitrite are being processed.
