Neocaridina shrimp do best in fully cycled aquariums with stable, tested water. Practical starting targets are 68–78°F, pH 6.5–8.0, GH 6–12 dGH and KH 2–8 dKH, with 0 ppm ammonia and 0 ppm nitrite. TDS is useful for tracking change, but it does not tell you which minerals or dissolved substances are present.

These are starting ranges, not guarantees. Match the shrimp to your tested water and the seller’s established conditions whenever possible. A stable value near the edge of a suitable range is usually safer than repeatedly changing water chemistry to chase a “perfect” number.

Always confirm the needs of the exact Neocaridina line you are buying. If your source water falls far outside these ranges, it may be safer to choose livestock suited to that water or prepare remineralized water consistently.

GH: Mineral Content for Neocaridina Shrimp

General hardness, or GH, primarily reflects dissolved calcium and magnesium. These minerals support normal biological functions and are relevant to formation of a new exoskeleton after molting.

Low GH can mean insufficient mineral availability. Very high GH can also create problems, especially when paired with abrupt changes. Test GH with a liquid drop kit rather than assuming that hard-looking tap-water deposits tell the whole story.

Do not add mineral products automatically. Test first, then follow the product label and re-test before the water enters the aquarium.

KH and pH: Stability Matters

Carbonate hardness, or KH, is the water’s buffering capacity. In many tap-water Neocaridina aquariums, some KH helps resist sudden pH drops. A low-KH aquarium can work, but it requires closer observation because pH may move more easily.

pH should be interpreted alongside KH, substrate and source water. Active buffering substrates can lower KH and pH, while inert substrates generally have less effect. For a typical Neocaridina setup, an inert substrate often makes it easier to preserve the chemistry of suitable tap water.

Avoid using quick-fix “pH up” or “pH down” products to force a number. They can create a short-lived reading followed by another swing. If the water is consistently unsuitable, use a repeatable water-preparation method instead.

TDS: A Trend Tool, Not a Complete Water Test

A TDS meter estimates the total concentration of dissolved substances through conductivity. It cannot distinguish helpful calcium and magnesium from sodium, nitrate or other dissolved material. Two aquariums can show the same TDS while having very different chemistry.

Use TDS to answer practical questions:

  • Is evaporation concentrating dissolved material?
  • Did a water change cause a large shift?
  • Is the aquarium gradually accumulating dissolved waste or additives?
  • Is prepared replacement water consistent from batch to batch?

Use GH, KH, pH, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate tests to learn what the TDS number cannot show.

Temperature and Oxygen

Neocaridina tolerate a useful temperature range, but rapid swings are stressful. Warmer water speeds metabolism and holds less dissolved oxygen. Cooler water generally slows activity and breeding.

How to Test Your Water Before Buying Shrimp

  1. Test both the aquarium and the water you use for changes.
  2. Confirm that the tank is fully cycled: ammonia and nitrite must read 0 ppm.
  3. Record temperature, pH, GH, KH, TDS and nitrate.
  4. Repeat the tests on different days to check stability.
  5. Ask for the seller’s current water parameters when available.
  6. Make changes gradually and prepare replacement water consistently.

Water Changes Without Parameter Shock

The safest routine is consistent: use dechlorinated water, match temperature closely, and avoid a large GH, KH, pH or TDS difference between the tank and replacement water. Smaller routine changes are often easier to match than infrequent major changes.

Top off evaporation with water that does not add more minerals—commonly RO/DI water—because minerals remain behind when water evaporates. A top-off is not a water change; remove aquarium water periodically according to test results and tank conditions.
