The Amazon Sword (Echinodorus bleheri) is the classic centerpiece rosette plant of the freshwater hobby — broad, lance-shaped bright green leaves growing from a central crown. It is a large plant best suited to mid-sized and larger tanks where it can stretch out without dominating the entire layout. It ships potted in a small mesh basket with rock wool but should be planted directly in substrate for long-term growth.
Amazon Swords are heavy root feeders and grow steadily under medium light without CO2. They tolerate a wide range of water parameters and reward consistent fertilization with steady leaf production. A reliable centerpiece for low-tech planted tanks.
Care Notes
Amazon Swords root deeply in substrate. After removing from the pot and rinsing most of the rock wool off the roots, plant with the crown (where the leaves meet the roots) ABOVE the substrate. Burying the crown causes rot. Root tabs are strongly recommended — Swords are heavy root feeders.
This is a large plant. Give it space — a mature Amazon Sword can easily span 8-12 inches across and reach near the surface of a standard tank. Trim old or damaged leaves at the base with sharp scissors. The plant occasionally sends up a flower stalk that can be left to develop or trimmed off.
