Blue Bolt Shrimp

Caridina cantonensis

Why We Love This Shrimp

  • Premium Caridina coloration
  • Quarantined before shipping
  • Fascinating patterns
  • Rewarding to breed

Blue Bolt Shrimp are a Taiwan Bee variant of Caridina cantonensis, distinguished by their deep, solid blue body against clean white banding. The blue is saturated and opaque — not a translucent wash — which makes them one of the most visually striking invertebrates in the freshwater hobby. They are a step up in care demands from Neocaridina, suited to hobbyists who have already mastered stable shrimp tanks and are ready to manage soft, acidic RO water.

Every Blue Bolt we ship is quarantined at our facility in dedicated Caridina tanks running RO water and active substrate before it leaves. These are not big-box store shrimp — they are sourced for colour quality and held under the same parameters they need in your tank.

Care Notes

Stability is the single most important factor for Blue Bolt Shrimp. Temperature, pH, and TDS must remain consistent — sudden swings cause stress and losses. Use RO water remineralised with a Caridina-specific GH+ product; never use untreated tap water. KH must stay at or near zero — even small amounts of carbonate hardness will push pH upward over time. Active buffering substrate (ADA Amazonia, Controsoil, or equivalent) handles pH and KH passively and is strongly recommended. Feed sparingly 3–4 times per week with Caridina-appropriate foods; remove uneaten food within 24 hours. Never use copper-based medications.

Species Spotlight

Why We Love This Shrimp

01

Deep Blue You Won’t Find at a Pet Store

Blue Bolt colouration is saturated and solid — a dense, opaque blue across the body with clean white banding. It reads completely differently from the washed-out blue shrimp sold in most retail shops.

02

A Rewarding Level of Challenge

Caridina require precision that Neocaridina do not. Hobbyists who put in the setup work — RO water, active substrate, stable parameters — are rewarded with shrimp that consistently thrive and breed.

03

Parameters You Control

Once your RO setup is established, Caridina parameters are stable by design. The substrate buffers pH, the remineraliser fixes TDS, and the shrimp respond to consistency — not constant intervention.

Specialized Setup

Best Kept Species-Only

Caridina shrimp do best in dedicated soft-water setups with stable parameters. Pair with mosses, botanicals, and shrimp-safe plants instead of mixed livestock.

⚠ Do Not Mix With
  • Any fish — Caridina are best kept in species-only invertebrate setups
  • Snails or inverts requiring harder or warmer water
  • Neocaridina — water chemistry requirements are incompatible; keep in separate dedicated tanks
Expert Advice
Razz Aquatics Recommendation

Set up your RO water, remineraliser, and active substrate and let the tank run for at least four to six weeks before your Blue Bolts arrive. Verify parameters — TDS 100–150, GH 4–6, KH 0–1, pH 5.8–6.8 — before introducing any shrimp. Java Moss or Subwassertang gives them grazing surfaces and cover for juveniles, and dark substrate makes the blue colouration dramatically more visible.

Common Questions

Blue Bolt Shrimp FAQ

Are Blue Bolt Shrimp good for beginners?+
Blue Bolt Shrimp are best suited to hobbyists who have already kept Neocaridina successfully. They require soft, acidic water produced with RO filtration and a Caridina-specific GH+ remineraliser. The equipment investment and parameter discipline involved make them an intermediate-to-advanced species.
Do I need special substrate?+
Active buffering substrate (ADA Amazonia, Controsoil, or equivalent) is strongly recommended. It maintains low pH and near-zero KH passively without constant intervention. Replace when it loses buffering capacity, typically after 12–18 months.
How are Blue Bolt Shrimp shipped?+
Professionally packed in an insulated box with a heat or cold pack matched to your local weather forecast. Livestock ships Monday through Thursday and delivers Tuesday through Friday. Choose your preferred delivery date at checkout.
Is there a live arrival guarantee?+
Yes — 100% Live Arrival Guarantee on every order. Photo any DOA in the sealed bag on the day of delivery and submit a claim through the Start a Claim page. Approved claims are resolved with store credit, refund, or replacement at Razz Aquatics’ discretion.
What water parameters do Blue Bolt Shrimp need?+
pH 5.8–6.8, TDS 100–150, GH 4–6, KH 0–1, temperature 65–72°F. RO water remineralised with a Caridina-specific GH+ product is required. Tap water — even soft tap water — is not suitable because residual carbonate hardness will push pH up over time.
Can Blue Bolt Shrimp live with Neocaridina?+
They can physically share a tank, but their water chemistry requirements are incompatible. Caridina need soft, acidic water (pH 5.8–6.8, KH near zero) while Neocaridina tolerate harder, more alkaline conditions. Keeping both species together means compromising parameters for one — dedicated tanks are strongly recommended.
What is the free shipping threshold?+
Free 2-Day Shipping on orders $120+. Free Overnight on orders $200+. Plants and dry goods ship free at $75+.
How do I acclimate Blue Bolt Shrimp?+
Drip acclimate slowly: empty the bag into a small container and drip tank water in at 2–3 drops per second for 1–3 hours. Net the shrimp into the tank — never add bag water to your aquarium. Dim the lights for the first hour. Slow drip acclimation is especially critical for Caridina because rapid parameter shifts during the transition cause the most losses.

Plants That Pair Perfectly

Live plants give shrimp constant grazing surfaces, sheltered hiding spots for shrimplets, and promote the natural biofilm growth shrimp feed on. Every plant is shrimp-safe and ships safely alongside livestock.

Adding plants is a great way to reach free 2-Day Shipping at $120+ while building a healthier tank.
