Beginner-friendly
Monte Carlo is one of the most popular carpeting plants in the freshwater hobby, valued for its small, round bright-green leaves and low creeping growth habit. Given medium to high light and a nutrient-rich substrate, it spreads via runners to form a dense, lush carpet across the foreground of any aquascape.
It is more forgiving than Dwarf Hairgrass and does not strictly require CO2 — though CO2 injection noticeably speeds up carpeting. Well-suited to shrimp tanks because its dense mat provides grazing surface and shelter for shrimplets and adult shrimp alike.

Why We Love This Plant
01
Lush Foreground Carpet
Forms a dense, bright-green mat across the foreground under medium to high light — one of the cleanest carpet looks in freshwater aquascaping.
02
Shrimplet Shelter
The dense carpet structure provides ideal shelter and grazing surfaces for shrimplets and adult shrimp in breeding setups.
03
No CO2 Required
CO2 improves growth speed, but Monte Carlo can carpet without it under strong lighting — more accessible than many carpet species.
Expert Advice
Razz Aquatics Recommendation
Monte Carlo is our go-to recommendation for anyone building their first planted carpet. Pair with a fine-grain substrate like Aqua Soil or a capped sand bed and medium-high lighting for best results. In shrimp tanks, the dense mat doubles as a shrimplet nursery.

Common Questions
Monte Carlo FAQ
Does Monte Carlo need CO2?+
CO2 is optional. It significantly speeds up runner production and carpeting density, but Monte Carlo can establish and spread without it under medium to high lighting. Expect slower results without CO2.
Why are my leaves turning yellow?+
Yellowing typically indicates a nutrient deficiency — most commonly nitrogen or iron. Dose a balanced liquid fertilizer and ensure lighting is adequate for carpeting growth.
What if my plant arrives dead or non-viable?+
Live plants are covered under our guarantee if they arrive dead or clearly non-viable. Photograph the plants in the original sealed bag, unopened, before opening or acclimating, on the day of delivery or the following morning. Submit your claim using the Start a Claim button.
How is it shipped?+
Shipped carefully packed Monday through Thursday. Plants ship free at $75+. Transit times vary by location.
How do I plant it?+
Separate the plant into small portions and plant them 1–2 cm apart across the foreground using tweezers. Planting in a fine-grain or nutrient-rich substrate helps runners anchor and spread.
Is it safe in a shrimp tank?+
Yes. Monte Carlo is well-suited to shrimp tanks. Its dense mat provides cover and grazing area for shrimp and shrimplets.
What about melt after arrival?+
Some melt during the transition to your water parameters is normal and does not qualify for a claim on its own. Remove dying leaves and allow new submerged growth to establish — most plants recover within 2–3 weeks under good light.
