Red Flame Sword

Echinodorus sp. 'Red Flame'

Why We Love This Plant

  • Selected for shrimp tanks
  • Improves water quality
  • No CO₂ required
  • Beginner-friendly

The Red Flame Sword is a cultivar of the Echinodorus family valued for its vivid red-orange coloration and wavy, ruffled leaf edges. Under medium to high light it produces bold, upright leaves with deep red hues that intensify with stronger lighting and regular fertilization — making it a natural focal point in any planted aquascape.

It is a moderate grower that anchors well in most substrates and does not require CO2 to thrive, though supplemental CO2 and a nutrient-rich substrate will enhance leaf color and growth rate. Like most sword plants it benefits from root tabs placed near the base, as it is a heavy root feeder.

Why We Love This Plant

01

Bold Red Coloration

Vivid red-orange leaves with ruffled edges create a natural focal point — the color intensifies under stronger light and regular fertilization.

02

Easy No-CO2 Grower

Thrives without CO2 injection, making it accessible for community tank setups and beginner planted aquariums alike.

03

Root Feeder

Anchor root tabs near the base for best results — swords are heavy root feeders and reward a nutrient-rich substrate with faster, richer growth.

Expert Advice
Razz Aquatics Recommendation

Plant this in the center-back third of your aquascape as a focal point. Pair with green foreground plants to let the red coloration stand out. Add root tabs at planting and every few months — the difference in leaf color and growth speed is noticeable.

Common Questions

Red Flame Sword FAQ

Why is the coloration not as red as the photo?+
Red coloration in sword plants intensifies with higher light intensity, regular iron and micronutrient supplementation, and CO2. New growth will show richer color as the plant acclimates to your tank conditions.
How do I propagate it?+
The plant produces daughter plantlets on runners. Allow them to develop 3–4 leaves and visible roots before separating and replanting independently.
Is it safe in a shrimp tank?+
Yes. Red Flame Sword is a plant and does not harm shrimp. Its broad base and root structure can provide some ground-level cover, though it is primarily a midground to background plant.
What about melt after arrival?+
Some leaf melt during the transition to your water parameters is normal and does not qualify for a claim on its own. Remove decaying leaves and allow new growth to emerge — most plants rebound within 2–3 weeks.
What is the free shipping threshold?+
Free shipping on plants and dry goods at $75+.
How big does it get?+
Red Flame Swords typically reach 8–14 inches in height under aquarium conditions. They are best suited to tanks of 15 gallons or larger as a midground or background focal plant.
Do I need root tabs?+
Root tabs are strongly recommended. Echinodorus swords are heavy root feeders — placing root tabs near the base every 2–3 months noticeably improves growth rate and leaf color.
What if my plant arrives dead or non-viable?+
Live plants are covered under our guarantee if they arrive dead or clearly non-viable. Photograph the plants in the original sealed bag, unopened, before opening or acclimating, on the day of delivery or the following morning. Submit your claim using the Start a Claim button.
How is it shipped?+
Shipped carefully packed Monday through Thursday. Plants ship free at $75+. Transit times vary by location.
