Beginner-friendly
Red Root Floaters (Phyllanthus fluitans) are a popular floating plant known for their small round leaves and striking red undersides and roots. Under high light the topside of the leaves takes on deep red and pink hues, creating a vivid contrast at the water surface. Each portion contains 10–15 leaves with root structure intact.
They spread quickly across the surface, providing natural shade, reducing algae by competing for nutrients, and creating a dense canopy that shrimp and fry use for cover. They work especially well in betta tanks and shrimp breeding setups where surface cover encourages natural behavior.

Expert Advice
Razz Aquatics Recommendation
Best results come from high light and a still water surface. If you have a strong filter creating surface agitation, use a floating ring or corner barrier to give them a calm zone. Pairs well with any shrimp tank or betta setup where natural surface cover is desired.

Common Questions
Red Root Floaters FAQ
Why aren't my Red Root Floaters turning red?+
Red coloration requires high light intensity. Under low or medium light the leaves stay green. Increase lighting and ensure the leaves are dry on top — water splashing onto the leaves from filters or surface agitation significantly reduces red coloration.
They're spreading too fast — what do I do?+
Thin them regularly by removing a portion from the surface every 1–2 weeks. Left unchecked they can cover the entire surface and block light to plants below.
What if my plant arrives dead or non-viable?+
Live plants are covered under our guarantee if they arrive dead or clearly non-viable. Photograph the plants in the original sealed bag, unopened, before opening or acclimating, on the day of delivery or the following morning. Submit your claim using the Start a Claim button.
How is it shipped?+
Shipped carefully packed Monday through Thursday. Plants ship free at $75+. Transit times vary by location.
How do I keep them red long-term?+
High light, still water surface (minimize surface agitation), and regular iron and micronutrient dosing all help maintain and intensify the red coloration. A glass lid or floating ring to reduce water movement across the surface also helps.
Are they safe in a shrimp tank?+
Yes. Red Root Floaters are a popular choice for shrimp tanks. The trailing roots provide additional surface area for biofilm and give shrimplets natural cover at the water surface.
What about damage or yellowing after arrival?+
Some minor damage or yellowing during transit is normal for floating plants and does not qualify for a claim on its own. Remove any damaged leaves and allow the healthy portions to acclimate — new growth should emerge within 1–2 weeks under good light.
