When inert substrate is the better choice
Choose inert substrate when the source water is already suitable and you want changes to come from your water preparation rather than the substrate. It is also useful when you want predictable long-term behavior and do not need the substrate to lower pH or KH.
Inert does not mean maintenance-free. Fine debris can settle between grains, rooted plants may need fertilizer, and very coarse gravel can trap more waste than a finer, easy-to-siphon surface.
When active substrate is the better choice
Active substrate makes sense when the entire aquarium is designed around its buffering behavior. This is common in some Caridina systems using reverse-osmosis or deionized water that is remineralized to a deliberate GH target without adding meaningful KH.
Do not add active substrate only because it appears on a shrimp checklist. In harder, higher-KH water, the substrate and source water can work against each other, shorten buffering life, and create avoidable swings during water changes.
Substrate selection checklist
- Name the shrimp: Neocaridina and soft-water Caridina are not one interchangeable setup.
- Test the source water: Record GH, KH and pH before choosing a buffering product.
- Read the product instructions: Some aquasoils release compounds during startup and require a specific cycling or water-change routine.
- Plan the plants: Moss and rhizome plants do not need nutrient-rich soil, while rooted plants may benefit from nutrients at the root zone.
- Consider color and grain: Dark substrate can emphasize light shrimp; light substrate can emphasize blue and dark shrimp. Use smooth, aquarium-appropriate material.
- Plan replacement: Active substrate does not buffer forever.
How deep should shrimp-tank substrate be?
Use only the depth needed to hold the planned plants and create the layout. A shallow layer is easier to clean in a moss-and-hardscape tank; rooted plants may need more depth. Avoid creating deep, compact pockets that cannot be maintained.
Can a shrimp tank be bare bottom?
Yes. Bare-bottom tanks are easy to inspect and siphon, which can help in quarantine or breeding workflows. They provide less planting support and less visual cover, so add other safe surfaces such as moss, wood, or removable plant containers.
