What Do Freshwater Shrimp Eat? Foods and Feeding Schedule

Blue Dream Neocaridina shrimp grazing on moss in a planted aquarium

Freshwater shrimp eat biofilm, algae, decaying plant material and prepared shrimp foods. In a mature aquarium they graze throughout the day, but a colony still needs measured supplemental food—especially in a clean or newly established tank.

At Razz Aquatics, we feed for the shrimp actually in the aquarium, not for a maximum stocking chart. In a small tank, leftover food is a quicker problem than a missed feeding.

What shrimp eat in an aquarium

Biofilm and algae
Natural grazing varies with tank maturity and maintenance.
Prepared shrimp food
Use an appropriate food in small portions and remove uneaten food.
Leaf litter and botanicals
Aquarium-safe botanicals can add grazing surfaces; add gradually.
Vegetables
Offer suitable prepared foods in small portions and remove leftovers.

A practical feeding routine

  1. Start with a small portion, especially for a new colony.
  2. Watch how much remains after feeding.
  3. Remove leftover food rather than leaving it to break down.
  4. Adjust slowly as the colony and tank maturity change.

Signs to feed less

  • Food is routinely left behind.
  • Water quality becomes harder to keep stable.
  • Film or debris builds up where food lands.

Feeding only works in a stable tank. Start with our shrimp tank cycling guide, then review Neocaridina water parameters and our freshwater shrimp care guide.

Once the aquarium is ready, explore our Neocaridina shrimp collection.

Frequently asked questions

Do shrimp need to be fed every day?

The right frequency depends on the colony and tank. Measured feedings and observation are safer than a fixed universal schedule.

Do shrimp only eat algae?

No. Algae and biofilm are part of their diet, but a clean tank may need supplemental food.

How do I know if I am overfeeding?

Regular leftover food and declining water quality are reasons to reduce the portion.
