Beginner-friendly
Bacopa caroliniana is a classic background stem plant — bright green oval leaves on upright stems that grow steadily under moderate light. It ships as a small bunch of cut stems, lead-weighted together at the base. The stems should be separated, trimmed at the base, and planted individually in substrate.
Under medium light without CO2, Bacopa stays a clean true green. It may develop warmer copper or purple tones under stronger light, CO2, and consistent nutrients. It tolerates a wide range of water parameters, making it one of the more forgiving stem plants for newer aquascapers.
Care Notes
Bacopa caroliniana grows steadily under medium light. CO2 is not required; the plant draws nutrients from both substrate and water column, so a basic root tab and/or liquid fertilizer regimen keeps growth healthy.
Trim tall stems regularly and replant the tops to keep the bunch dense — left untrimmed, lower leaves drop as the stem stretches toward the light. Brighter lighting plus iron-rich dosing may bring out warmer tones on the upper foliage over time.

Why We Love This Plant
01
Forgiving Background Stem
Bacopa caroliniana tolerates a wide range of water parameters and grows well under medium light without CO2. One of the easier stem plants to grow successfully in a low-tech tank.
02
Variable Color Potential
Under low-to-medium light it stays bright green. It may develop warmer copper or purple tones on the upper leaves under stronger light, CO2, and consistent nutrients.
03
Great For Shrimp Tanks
Selected for shrimp tanks and handled with invertebrate safety in mind. The dense vertical growth gives shrimp natural midwater cover and grazing surface.
Expert Advice
Razz Aquatics Recommendation
Separate the bunch into individual stems before planting — bunches planted together rot at the base where the lead weight compresses them. Cut about half an inch from the bottom of each stem with sharp scissors, then push each stem about an inch into the substrate, spaced an inch apart. Bacopa roots into substrate within a week or two. To propagate, cut the top half off a tall stem and replant it; the bottom half will branch.

Common Questions
Bacopa (Bacopa Caroliniana) FAQ
Is Bacopa caroliniana safe for shrimp?+
Yes — Bacopa is great for shrimp tanks. We select plants for shrimp tanks and handle them with invertebrate safety in mind.
Do I need CO2 or fertilizer?+
No. Bacopa grows without CO2. It does best with at least basic liquid dosing or root tabs because it draws nutrients from both substrate and water column. CO2 is optional and not required.
How tall does it get?+
Bacopa caroliniana reaches the water surface in most tanks if left untrimmed. Regular topping keeps it at a manageable midground or background height. The cuttings replant easily.
How is it shipped?+
Plants are packed with damp protective material to help protect them in transit. Weather protection may be used when conditions require it. Plants typically ship Monday through Thursday so they avoid sitting over the weekend.
Is there a live arrival guarantee?+
Yes — Live Plant Arrival Guarantee on every order. Photograph the plant in its original packaging on the day of delivery, before trimming or replanting, and submit a claim through the Start a Claim page. Approved claims are resolved with store credit, refund, or replacement at Razz Aquatics' discretion.
How do I plant the bunch?+
Remove the lead weight, separate the bunch into individual stems, and trim about half an inch off the bottom of each. Push each stem about an inch into substrate, spaced an inch apart. Planted in a bunch with the lead weight intact, the base will rot.
How do I get the red or purple color?+
Bacopa caroliniana may develop warmer copper or purple tones on the upper leaves under stronger light, CO2, and consistent nutrients. Under low-to-medium light without supplementation, the plant stays bright green. Color is not guaranteed.
How do I propagate it?+
Cut the top third off a tall stem with sharp scissors and plant the top in substrate next to the original. The original stem branches at the cut, and the top develops new roots within a week or two.
What is the free shipping threshold?+
Plants and dry goods ship free at $75+. Adding livestock to your order unlocks free 2-Day Shipping at $120+ or free Overnight at $200+.
