Black Neon Tetras have a distinctive two-toned stripe: a white iridescent upper stripe and a deep black lower stripe, giving them a bold, graphic appearance. Despite the name, they are not related to Neon Tetras — they are a different genus. In a planted tank with dark substrate, a school of 10–15 creates a striking contrasting pattern.
Native to the Paraguay River basin in Brazil, they are hardy and adaptable to most stable water conditions. Completely peaceful, safe with all shrimp and snails. Every fish we ship is quarantined before departure.
Care Notes
Black Neon Tetras are hardy, peaceful schooling fish that adapt well to most stable water conditions. Feed quality small pellets or flake twice daily; supplement with micro worms or frozen daphnia. They prefer planted tanks with some open swimming space, moderate flow, and slightly acidic to neutral water. Their white iridescent and black stripe reads most clearly against dark substrate.
Keep in groups of at least 8. Small groups are nervous; a proper school is confident, constantly visible, and shows natural schooling behaviour. Peaceful with all tank mates and safe with adult shrimp.
