Why We Love This Fish

  • Verified shrimp-safe species
  • Quarantined before shipping
  • Stunning in planted tanks
  • Peaceful community fish

Congo Tetras are one of the most visually striking schooling fish in the freshwater hobby. Male iridescent scales shift from gold to blue to violet depending on the angle of light, and males develop extended, flowing fin tips. Native to the Congo River basin in Central Africa, they are larger than typical nano fish at 3 inches and need correspondingly larger aquariums.

Despite their size they are peaceful fish well-suited to larger planted community tanks with soft, slightly acidic water. Every fish we ship is quarantined before departure.

Care Notes

Congo Tetras prefer soft, slightly acidic to neutral water and can be sensitive during the first week after arrival — keep lights dim and avoid sudden parameter changes. Feed a varied diet of quality pellets, flake, and occasional frozen foods. Males may show fin damage in cramped conditions; provide horizontal space.

Keep in groups of at least 8 in a tank large enough to give them horizontal swimming space. Peaceful with most community tank mates. Note: at 3 inches and 30-gallon minimum, Congo Tetras are not true nano fish but are excellent for larger planted community tanks.

Common Questions

Congo Tetra FAQ

Are Congo Tetras safe with shrimp?+
Adult shrimp are generally ignored, but at 3 inches they have larger mouths than nano fish. Shrimplets are at risk. Recommend heavily planted tanks or shrimp-free setups.
How many should I keep?+
8–10 minimum. Small groups show pale colour and nervous behaviour.
How do I acclimate Congo Tetras?+
Float the bag 15 minutes for temperature. Drip-acclimate at 2–3 drops per second for 30–60 minutes. Net the fish into the tank — never add bag water. Dim lights for the first few hours.
How are these fish shipped?+
Via Overnight / UPS Next Day Air. Professionally packed in an insulated box with a heat or cold pack matched to your local weather. Fish ship Monday through Thursday and deliver Tuesday through Friday.
Is there a live arrival guarantee?+
Yes — 100% Live Arrival Guarantee on every order. Photo any DOA in the sealed bag on the day of delivery and submit a claim through the Start a Claim page. Approved claims are resolved with store credit, refund, or replacement at Razz Aquatics’ discretion.
What tank size do Congo Tetras need?+
30-gallon minimum. Active mid-water swimmers needing horizontal space. Longer tanks (36+ inches) preferred.
What are their water parameters?+
Temperature 73–81°F, pH 6.0–7.5. Adaptable to stable, quality tap water.
Why does fish shipping cost more?+
Fish ship via Overnight / Next Day Air to minimise stress and maximise live arrival success. This is reflected in the shipping cost at checkout.
What is the free shipping threshold?+
Free Overnight on fish orders $200+. Overnight shipping applies below that threshold. Plants and dry goods ship free at $75+.
Build a Better Aquarium

Plants That Pair Perfectly

Live plants give nano fish cover, reduce stress, and create a more natural aquarium. They help break up sightlines, provide shelter for shy fish, and support a healthier planted tank.

Add live plants to create cover, improve water quality, and build a healthier aquarium for your fish.
