Exclamation Point Rasboras

Boraras urophthalmoides

Why We Love This Fish

  • Verified shrimp-safe species
  • Quarantined before shipping
  • Stunning in planted tanks
  • Peaceful community fish

Exclamation Point Rasboras (Boraras urophthalmoides) are one of the smallest nano schooling fish available in the hobby, topping out under an inch fully grown. Named for the distinctive dark spot-and-dash marking along their flanks that resembles an exclamation point, they display vivid orange-red coloration that intensifies in a planted tank with dark substrate and soft, slightly acidic water.

A true schooling species — keep 6 or more to see their best behavior and color. Despite their tiny size, Exclamation Point Rasboras are active and inquisitive, constantly moving through mid-to-lower column space. They’re among the safer nano fish choices for a shrimp community tank thanks to their small mouths and gentle temperament.

Species Spotlight

Why We Love This Fish

01

Genuinely Tiny

Under an inch fully grown — one of the smallest schooling fish in freshwater. They work in a true nano setup and add natural movement without outgrowing the space.

02

Nano Tank & Shrimp Friendly

Their small mouths and gentle temperament make them a popular choice for planted nano tanks alongside adult Neocaridina shrimp. Good contrast against an active shrimp colony.

03

Better in a School

Color and confidence both improve significantly with more fish. Keep 8–12 or more for the best display — a tight school in a planted blackwater tank is hard to beat.

Expert Advice
Razz Aquatics Recommendation

Keep a school of 10 or more for the best display — numbers make them bolder and more colorful. A blackwater-style planted tank with dark substrate, Indian almond leaves, and fine-leaved plants like Java moss or hornwort lets this species really shine.

Common Questions

Exclamation Point Rasboras FAQ

How big do Exclamation Point Rasboras get?+
Fully grown, around 0.6–0.8 inches — making them one of the smallest schooling fish in the freshwater hobby. They’re a true micro fish.
How many should I keep?+
A school of 6 is the minimum; 8–12 or more really shows them at their best. They’re more active and better colored in larger groups.
What water parameters do they need?+
pH 6.0–7.5, temperature 72–80°F. They prefer soft, slightly acidic water and do best with stable parameters. Planted tanks with gentle flow suit them well.
How are they shipped?+
Professionally packed in an insulated box with a heat or cold pack matched to your local weather. Livestock ships Monday through Thursday and delivers Tuesday through Friday. Choose your preferred delivery date at checkout.
Is there a live arrival guarantee?+
Yes — 100% Live Arrival Guarantee on every order. Photo any DOA in the sealed bag on the day of delivery and submit a claim through the Start a Claim page. Approved claims are resolved with store credit, refund, or replacement at Razz Aquatics’ discretion.
Are they safe with shrimp?+
Their small mouths present minimal risk to adult shrimp. Shrimplets may occasionally be picked at, but many keepers maintain them successfully alongside Neocaridina colonies. Dense planting gives shrimplets cover if needed.
What do they eat?+
They need small foods — nano pellets, finely crushed flake, and micro-sized freeze-dried or frozen foods like daphnia or baby brine shrimp. Their mouths are tiny; standard pellet sizes are too large.
What tank size do they need?+
A 5-gallon works for a small school, but 10 gallons or more gives room for natural schooling behavior. They stay in the lower-to-mid column.
What is the free shipping threshold?+
Free Overnight on fish orders $200+. Plants and dry goods ship free at $75+.

Plants That Pair Perfectly

Live plants give nano fish cover, reduce stress, and create a more natural aquarium. They help break up sightlines, provide shelter for shy fish, and support a healthier planted tank.

Add live plants to create cover, improve water quality, and build a healthier aquarium for your fish.
