Stunning in planted tanks
Peaceful community fish
Kuhli Loaches are eel-shaped bottom dwellers native to Southeast Asia — their banded orange and brown body moves with a sinuous, fluid motion through substrate and around decor. Despite their unusual appearance they are completely peaceful and safe with most invertebrates.
They are excellent substrate cleaners, constantly moving through sand in search of food, stirring detritus and preventing anaerobic dead spots. Every Kuhli Loach we ship is quarantined before departure.
Care Notes
Kuhli Loaches are burrowers and need fine sand or very smooth substrate to protect their barbels and undersides — coarse gravel will cause injury. Provide plenty of hiding spots: driftwood, caves, dense plant bases. They are nocturnal and spend the day mostly hidden. Feed sinking foods after lights-out. Ensure a fully secure lid with no gaps — Kuhli Loaches are notorious escape artists.
Keep in groups of at least 4–6 — alone they are stressed and rarely seen. A proper group is far more active and visible. They are peaceful with all tank mates.
The eel-like movement of Kuhli Loaches through a planted substrate is unlike any other freshwater fish. Once you have them, no planted tank feels complete without them.

Bottom-Level Substrate Cleaner
Kuhlis root through sand constantly, finding food that sinks past other fish and preventing substrate compaction.
03
Quirky and Personable
Kuhli Loaches recognise feeding time, interact with each other constantly, and occasionally pile on top of each other in a shared hiding spot.

Compatible Tank Mates
These nano fish coexist well with shrimp and other peaceful invertebrates.

Expert Advice
Razz Aquatics Recommendation
Keep at least 4–6 in a 20-gallon with fine sand substrate, driftwood, and dense plant cover. A lone Kuhli is a stressed, invisible Kuhli. Secure your lid before they arrive — Kuhli Loaches will find gaps. Feed sinking pellets or frozen bloodworm after lights-out. Common Questions
Kuhli Loach FAQ
Are Kuhli Loaches safe with shrimp?+
Generally yes with adult shrimp. In planted tanks with cover they ignore adult shrimp. Shrimplets may be at some risk given bottom-foraging behaviour.
Do Kuhli Loaches escape?+
Yes — frequently. They can squeeze through surprisingly small gaps. Ensure your tank has a fully secure lid with no openings.
How do I acclimate Kuhli Loaches?+
Float the bag 15 minutes for temperature. Drip-acclimate at 2–3 drops per second for 30–60 minutes. Net the fish into the tank — never add bag water. Dim lights for the first few hours.
How are these fish shipped?+
Via Overnight / UPS Next Day Air. Professionally packed in an insulated box with a heat or cold pack matched to your local weather. Fish ship Monday through Thursday and deliver Tuesday through Friday.
Is there a live arrival guarantee?+
Yes — 100% Live Arrival Guarantee on every order. Photo any DOA in the sealed bag on the day of delivery and submit a claim through the Start a Claim page. Approved claims are resolved with store credit, refund, or replacement at Razz Aquatics’ discretion.
How many should I keep?+
4–6 minimum. Lone or paired Kuhlis hide constantly. A group is far more active and visible.
What substrate do they need?+
Fine sand or very smooth fine gravel. Coarse gravel injures their barbels and belly.
Why does fish shipping cost more?+
Fish ship via Overnight / Next Day Air to minimise stress and maximise live arrival success. This is reflected in the shipping cost at checkout.
What is the free shipping threshold?+
Free Overnight on fish orders $200+. Overnight shipping applies below that threshold. Plants and dry goods ship free at $75+.
Live plants give nano fish cover, reduce stress, and create a more natural aquarium. They help break up sightlines, provide shelter for shy fish, and support a healthier planted tank.
