Otocinclus catfish are the gold standard for soft algae control in planted tanks. A group of 4–6 Otos working glass, leaves, and hardscape is one of the most effective natural maintenance systems available.
They are tiny — reaching only 1.5–2 inches — and completely peaceful. Safe with all shrimp species and snails. They do best in established tanks with good flow and stable water quality. Every Oto we ship is quarantined before departure.
Care Notes
Otocinclus need a mature, established tank with abundant biofilm and soft algae — they cannot survive on algae wafers alone in a new tank. Do not add Otos to a tank under 3 months old. Sensitive to ammonia and nitrite. Supplement with blanched zucchini or cucumber 2–3 times per week even in algae-rich tanks.
Keep in groups of at least 4–6 — lone Otos are stressed and reclusive. Completely peaceful with shrimp, snails, and all plants. Never use copper-based medications.
Otos graze diatoms and green film algae from glass, leaves, and hardscape constantly. A group of 4–6 in a planted tank keeps surfaces cleaner than any scrubbing.

How many Otos should I keep?+
At least 4–6. Lone Otos become stressed and reclusive. A small group is more active and more effective.
How do I acclimate Otos?+
Float the bag 15 minutes for temperature. Drip-acclimate at 2–3 drops per second for 30–60 minutes. Net the fish into the tank — never add bag water. Dim lights for the first few hours.
