Species Profile

Pea Puffer

Carinotetraodon travancoricus

Why We Love This Fish

  • Verified shrimp-safe species
  • Quarantined before shipping
  • Stunning in planted tanks
  • Peaceful community fish

Pea Puffers (Carinotetraodon travancoricus) are the world’s smallest puffer fish — reaching just 1 inch at adulthood. What they lack in size they make up for in personality: they are curious, interactive, and will track your finger across the glass. Each fish has a distinct individual character.

They are native to rivers in Kerala, India, and are the only fully freshwater puffer commonly available to hobbyists. Despite their small size, they are voracious predators of snails and small invertebrates. They are not community fish and should be housed carefully. Every fish we ship is quarantined before departure.

Care Notes

Pea Puffers are predatory carnivores that require live or frozen foods — they will not accept dry pellets or flake food reliably. Feed frozen bloodworm, daphnia, or brine shrimp daily. Live snails (bladder or pond snails) are an excellent staple and help wear down their continuously growing beak teeth. Varied diet is essential.

Pea Puffers can be highly aggressive, particularly males toward other puffers and toward anything with flowing fins. The safest setup is a species-only tank. If mixed, choose only fast-moving, short-finned fish. Never house with shrimp or snails you want to keep.

Species Spotlight

Why We Love This Fish

01

The Most Personality in an Inch

Pea Puffers track your movement, investigate their environment with genuine curiosity, and develop recognisable individual personalities. No other nano fish comes close for owner engagement.

02

The Only Fully Freshwater Puffer

All the character of larger puffer species in a fish that fits in a 5-gallon tank.

03

Natural Snail Control

Pea Puffers systematically eliminate pest snails. If a bladder or pond snail infestation is your problem, a Pea Puffer is the most effective solution available.

Expert Advice
Razz Aquatics Recommendation

Pea Puffers are best in species-only setups — a group of 3 in a well-planted 10–15 gallon is the most stable and rewarding approach. If mixed with other fish, choose only fast-moving, short-finned species and monitor closely. Do not house with shrimp, snails you want to keep, or any fish with long or flowing fins. Establish a live snail feeder colony before your puffers arrive. Fish ship Overnight / Next Day Air.

Common Questions

Pea Puffer FAQ

Are Pea Puffers safe with shrimp?+
No. Pea Puffers will eat shrimp of all sizes. Do not house with any shrimp species.
Can Pea Puffers live with other fish?+
With extreme caution only. The safest approach is species-only. If you must mix, choose only fast-moving, short-finned fish. Monitor closely and be prepared to separate.
How many should I keep?+
A single fish in 5 gallons, or 3 in a 10–15 gallon with plenty of plants. Do not keep just 2 — the dominant fish will bully the other relentlessly.
Why does fish shipping cost more?+
Fish ship via Overnight / Next Day Air to minimise stress and maximise live arrival success. This is reflected in the shipping cost at checkout.
What is the free shipping threshold?+
Free Overnight on fish orders $200+. Overnight shipping applies below that threshold. Plants and dry goods ship free at $75+.
Are Pea Puffers safe with snails?+
No — they will eat them. Bladder and pond snails are food, not tank mates.
What do Pea Puffers eat?+
Live or frozen foods only: bloodworm, daphnia, brine shrimp, live bladder or pond snails. Varied diet is essential.
How do I acclimate Pea Puffers?+
Float the bag 15 minutes for temperature. Drip-acclimate at 2–3 drops per second for 30–60 minutes. Net the fish into the tank — never add bag water. Dim lights for the first few hours.
How are these fish shipped?+
Via Overnight / UPS Next Day Air. Professionally packed in an insulated box with a heat or cold pack matched to your local weather. Fish ship Monday through Thursday and deliver Tuesday through Friday.
Is there a live arrival guarantee?+
Yes — 100% Live Arrival Guarantee on every order. Photo any DOA in the sealed bag on the day of delivery and submit a claim through the Start a Claim page. Approved claims are resolved with store credit, refund, or replacement at Razz Aquatics’ discretion.
Build a Better Aquarium

Plants That Pair Perfectly

Live plants give nano fish cover, reduce stress, and create a more natural aquarium. They help break up sightlines, provide shelter for shy fish, and support a healthier planted tank.

Add live plants to create cover, improve water quality, and build a healthier aquarium for your fish.
