Rainbow Shiners

Notropis chrosomus

Why We Love This Fish

  • Verified shrimp-safe species
  • Quarantined before shipping
  • Stunning in planted tanks
  • Peaceful community fish

Rainbow Shiners (Notropis chrosomus) are a North American native schooling fish with metallic silver-blue sides and brilliant pink-to-red fins that intensify during breeding season. They’re an increasingly popular choice for planted coldwater setups — and one of the few truly stunning native fish that thrives in a standard aquarium.

They’re undemanding, active, and peaceful. Being coldwater fish, they don’t need a heater in most home environments and are compatible with other coldwater or room-temperature species. Like most schooling fish, they’re best kept in groups of 8 or more where their natural shoaling behavior fully expresses.

Why We Love This Fish

01

Stunning Native Color

Metallic silver-blue with vivid pink-to-red fins that intensify with mood and season — a combination you don’t find in most tropical schooling fish.

02

No Heater Required

Rainbow Shiners are coldwater fish that thrive at room temperature. No heater needed in most home setups — a real advantage for unheated planted tanks.

03

Active Schoolers

A group of 10 or more Rainbow Shiners in a planted tank is constantly in motion — coherent, fast-moving, and visually impressive from across the room.

Expert Advice
Razz Aquatics Recommendation

Keep 10 or more for the best schooling behavior — smaller groups tend to be nervous. A planted tank with open swimming space in the mid-column and some current suits them well. No heater needed in most home setups; aim for 60–72°F.

Common Questions

Are Rainbow Shiners safe with shrimp?+
Generally yes with adult shrimp, though smaller shrimp or shrimplets may be at risk. Best kept with larger, established shrimp colonies.
How are Rainbow Shiners shipped?+
Professionally packed in an insulated box with a heat or cold pack matched to your local weather. Livestock ships Monday through Thursday and delivers Tuesday through Friday. Choose your preferred delivery date at checkout.
Is there a live arrival guarantee?+

Plants That Pair Perfectly

Live plants give nano fish cover, reduce stress, and create a more natural aquarium. They help break up sightlines, provide shelter for shy fish, and support a healthier planted tank.

Add live plants to create cover, improve water quality, and build a healthier aquarium for your fish.
