Rotala Red

Rotala wallichii or Rotala sp. 'Red'

Why We Love This Plant

  • Selected for shrimp tanks
  • Improves water quality
  • No CO₂ required
  • Beginner-friendly

Rotala Red is a fine-leaved red stem plant with needle-like whorls of small red-to-orange leaves that create a delicate, feathery texture in the background. Under strong light and CO2, the stems develop deep red to orange-red coloration with a softer, more textural visual quality than broader-leaved red stems like Ludwigia. It ships as a small bunch of cut stems, lead-weighted together at the base.

Rotala is a moderate-to-demanding plant. It responds strongly to light intensity and CO2 — under lower light without CO2 it stays more green. The stems should be separated, trimmed at the base, and planted individually in substrate.

Care Notes

Rotala Red grows best under high light with CO2 injection and consistent iron-rich dosing. Color is most vivid near the top of the stems where light intensity is highest. Trim regularly and replant the tops — the fine leaves lose color and begin to drop from lower portions of the stem if left untrimmed too long.

Prefers soft, slightly acidic water. Tolerates harder water but may grow more slowly and with less vivid color than in ideal parameters.

Why We Love This Plant

01

Feathery Red Texture

Fine needle-like whorls of red-to-orange leaves create a delicate, feathery background texture that broader red stems can't replicate.

02

Vivid Color Under High Tech

Under high light, CO2, and iron dosing, the upper stems develop deep red to orange-red coloration. New growth is always the most colorful.

03

Selected for Shrimp Tanks

Selected for shrimp tanks and handled with invertebrate safety in mind.

Expert Advice
Razz Aquatics Recommendation

Rotala Red brings a softer, more feathery texture to the background than broad-leaved red stems. Separate the bunch and plant individual stems an inch apart. CO2 and high light are both needed for the signature vivid color. Top frequently — the new growth at the tips is always the most colorful.

Common Questions

Rotala Red FAQ

Is Rotala Red safe for shrimp?+
Yes — Rotala is great for shrimp tanks. We select plants for shrimp tanks and handle them with invertebrate safety in mind.
How do I plant the bunch?+
Remove the lead weight, separate the bunch into individual stems, and trim about half an inch off the bottom of each. Push each stem about an inch into substrate, spaced an inch apart.
What water parameters does it prefer?+
Rotala Red prefers soft, slightly acidic water in the pH 5.5–7.0 range. It tolerates harder water but may grow more slowly and with less vivid color.
What is the free shipping threshold?+
Plants and dry goods ship free at $75+. Adding livestock to your order unlocks free 2-Day Shipping at $120+ or free Overnight at $200+.
Do I need CO2 or fertilizer?+
CO2 is strongly recommended. Without high light and CO2, Rotala Red stays primarily green. Iron-rich dosing supports the red-orange color on the upper growth.
Why are the lower leaves dropping?+
Lower portions of Rotala stems lose light as the plant grows tall, causing leaf drop. Top the stems regularly and replant the cuttings to maintain dense, colorful growth.
How is it shipped?+
Plants are packed with damp protective material to help protect them in transit. Weather protection may be used when conditions require it. Plants typically ship Monday through Thursday so they avoid sitting over the weekend.
Is there a live arrival guarantee?+
Yes — Live Plant Arrival Guarantee on every order. Photograph the plant in its original packaging on the day of delivery, before trimming or replanting, and submit a claim through the Start a Claim page. Approved claims are resolved with store credit, refund, or replacement at Razz Aquatics' discretion.
