Sparkling Gourami

Trichopsis pumila

Why We Love This Fish

  • Verified shrimp-safe species
  • Quarantined before shipping
  • Stunning in planted tanks
  • Peaceful community fish

Sparkling Gouramis (Trichopsis pumila) are small, iridescent labyrinth fish with stunning blue-green and red fin patterning that shifts with the light. Often overlooked in favor of their larger gourami cousins, they’re a standout species in the right setting — a quiet, planted nano tank where their colors and personality can take center stage.

One of the few freshwater fish that makes an audible sound — males produce a soft croaking or purring noise during courtship that’s often audible to nearby keepers. As labyrinth fish, they can breathe atmospheric air directly from the surface. They thrive in calm, planted tanks with low to moderate flow and soft, slightly acidic water.

Species Spotlight

Why We Love This Fish

01

They Actually Croak

Males make a soft, audible croaking sound during courtship — one of the only freshwater fish species you can literally hear. Once you’ve kept Sparkling Gouramis, it’s hard to go back.

02

Iridescent Color Shift

The blue-green body and red fin markings shift with light and viewing angle. In a planted blackwater tank with dark substrate, Sparkling Gouramis look remarkable.

03

Planted Tank Specialist

Low flow, dense planting, soft water — the same setup that’s ideal for shrimp and snails is exactly what Sparkling Gouramis love. A natural fit for a quiet nano community.

Expert Advice
Razz Aquatics Recommendation

Best in a calm, planted tank — Java moss, hornwort, or floating plants like frogbit create the shaded canopy they love. Indian almond leaves and dark substrate help bring out their colors and encourage natural courtship behavior.

Common Questions

Sparkling Gourami FAQ

Are Sparkling Gouramis hard to care for?+
Beginner–Intermediate. They’re not demanding feeders and tolerate a reasonable range of parameters. They do best in a stable, planted tank with slightly acidic water and low flow.
Can I keep more than one Sparkling Gourami?+
Yes, with some consideration. Males can be territorial with one another in small tanks. A single male works well; a mixed group with more females is fine in tanks 10 gallons and up. A larger footprint reduces conflict.
What do they eat?+
They accept most small prepared foods — nano pellets, small flake, and freeze-dried or frozen micro foods like daphnia or baby brine shrimp. Feed small amounts once or twice daily.
How are they shipped?+
Professionally packed in an insulated box with a heat or cold pack matched to your local weather. Livestock ships Monday through Thursday and delivers Tuesday through Friday. Choose your preferred delivery date at checkout.
Is there a live arrival guarantee?+
Yes — 100% Live Arrival Guarantee on every order. Photo any DOA in the sealed bag on the day of delivery and submit a claim through the Start a Claim page. Approved claims are resolved with store credit, refund, or replacement at Razz Aquatics’ discretion.
Do they really croak?+
Yes — males make a soft croaking or purring sound, especially during courtship. It’s one of the more unusual traits in freshwater fishkeeping. You’ll often hear them most clearly when the tank is quiet.
Are they safe with shrimp?+
Adult shrimp are generally left alone. Shrimplets may be at risk in smaller, sparse tanks. Dense planting gives shrimp fry places to hide. Many keepers keep them with Neocaridina successfully, but a dedicated shrimp breeding tank is safer.
What do I need to know about them as labyrinth fish?+
Like bettas, Sparkling Gouramis breathe atmospheric air from the surface. Make sure they can reach the surface — don’t seal the tank so tightly they’re blocked. Keep the air above the surface warm to avoid cold-air exposure.
What is the free shipping threshold?+
Free Overnight on fish orders $200+. Plants and dry goods ship free at $75+.
Build a Better Aquarium

Plants That Pair Perfectly

Live plants give nano fish cover, reduce stress, and create a more natural aquarium. They help break up sightlines, provide shelter for shy fish, and support a healthier planted tank.

Add live plants to create cover, improve water quality, and build a healthier aquarium for your fish.
